The Colors of Thought free essay sample
There are quite a few nights where I am lying in my bed, freezing, partially under the covers, unable to shut my mind off long enough to find some sleep. Im high off exhaustion, and my mind is flipping around different thoughts and events from throughout the day. My mind spills into thought processes where nothing makes sense. Everything seems to melt away into the space inside my mind, and my body feels like it is floating and twisting, but I have not moved a muscle. I close my eyes and feel like I own the world. I think about what I believe, what is in the past, what will be the future, my friends and familyââ¬âbasically, everything. I think about what I want to do, how I want to get there, and where I want to end up. I wonder about my life, and if it influences anybody elseââ¬â¢s life. We will write a custom essay sample on The Colors of Thought or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I wonder about the consequences of following either a dream or a statistic. I want to go everywhere to practice religions and cultures and learn something about mankind or myself that expands my reality. I want to know what it would be like to starve, to be rich, to be a different ethnicity, or even to understand politics because, letââ¬â¢s face it, nobody does. I also want responsibility, and to know when enough is enough. I want to make mistakes that will teach me but not destroy me. I want to know if children and grandchildren are in my future, and how or if a career will fit into that picture. I want to know if I will be merely content with my life or proud and joyful. I want to know if I will know as much as my grandmother, who practically has a sixth sense about premeditated mistakes. I see the world as paint flying in space. It is floating around me, and none of it makes sense. Then, it mixes into these colors that make me want to project the color of happiness, adventur e, mischievousness, pain and curiosity. The world is like my thought processes. None of it makes sense. The one thing I know for sure is that when I go to college, I want to live every color I am able to. I want to experience the passion of red. I look forward to being passionate about a topic I can gain an infinite amount of knowledge of and interests me. I want to struggle, and fail, and overall succeed in a way I canââ¬â¢t even imagine. I want to get lost in orange, which is creativity and imagination connected to individuality and personal opinion. In these areas, I excel, because I can see the world differently. I want to envelope myself in a world of brown and green, so that I can grow personally and educationally, while finding roots. These roots will help me build a base for my future. I want to absorb yellow and blue to harness the mental focus that comes with them. They symbolize clarity and mental awareness. I need to focus on my work as well as my responsibilities. I will gain the knowledge to see life, not as how I want to see it, but how it needs to be seen. I want to dive head first into indigo. It is deep and personal. It is intuition, and trying something new and different, whether you are terrified or completely prepared. I think am ready for this new leap in life. I have struggled, put others first, put myself first, lied, told the truth, snuck out, been to different countries, fought with my parents, lost a father, gained another, had my world crumble, and had help building it back up. I know who I am: a teenage girl dreaming of learning everything I can and working in the catacombs of France or the pyramids of Central and South America. And I am going to get there.

Sample Essay - Emory Wells, Something Wonderful
Sample Essay - Emory Wells, 'Something Wonderful''Something Wonderful' by Emory Wells, a poem by Theobald Spencer, is a sample essay for Emory's annual sample essay competition. This competition has grown in popularity in recent years as people become more curious about how to write a good essay. For those who like to apply for various college and university admissions requirements, this competition can be a great resource for information. We'll start with the poem because it's a bit different from other sample essays for Emory. It's much shorter than typical essays. But the beauty of the poem lies in its simplicity. As a student who loves poetry, I loved the idea of writing a short sample essay as a way to get some feedback on my work. The poem is a great sample because Emory offers other samples that vary in length. However, the poem was so short, I thought there would be no way that the poem would qualify for the competition. I was wrong! Once I read the sample essay, I was amazed a t how much I liked the poem.I've been reading poetry since I was a kid, and I love to take inspiration from different literary sources. One of my favorite writers is Sir Walter Scott. He was a fantastic writer. He was also a lot of fun to read. When I read 'Something Wonderful,' I was reminded of the way he made poetry enjoyable.I've had to write quite a few short samples in my time, and I've enjoyed all of them, but nothing comes close to 'Something Wonderful.' It's a pretty solid verse poem that always catches my attention. I'm glad that ithelped inspire me to write a short sample essay for Emory's sample essay competition. This is just one of the many samples that are available for sample essays. You can find more free sample essays online at the Association of American Colleges and Universities website. As we continue with our discussions of sample essays, let's talk about 'Something Wonderful.' I'd like to offer my sincere thanks to all of the teachers, mentors, teachers, adminis trators, and college admission officers who have encouraged me throughout my academic career. I am grateful for my life experiences, my family, my church, and my peers. Finally, I thank the students and teachers at Emory University who gave me the opportunity to receive a quality education.

Factors Affecting the Biotic and Abiotic features Essay Example
Factors Affecting the Biotic and Abiotic features Essay Example Factors Affecting the Biotic and Abiotic features Paper Factors Affecting the Biotic and Abiotic features Paper Factors affecting the role that the relationships between biotic and biotic factors contribute to the relationship between foliage and ground coverer Effie Electrocutions:A functioning ecosystem is totally reliant on the way in which factors such as biotic and biotic interrelate and create a balance of living and non-living. Biotic factors are those features of the environments of organisms arising from the activities of the other living organisms, relating to, produced by, or caused by living organisms (M. Than/ M. Hickman 2003:16). Biotic factors are non-living chemical and physical factors in the environment which include light, temperature, water, atmospheric gases, and wind as well as soil. The six major biotic factors are water, sunlight, oxygen, temperature, soil and climate (http://el. ERDA. Usage. Army. Mil/MIS/bicorn l/ HTML labia tic . HTML). Biotic and biotic factors combine to create a system or more precisely, an ecosystem which is a community of living and nonliving things considered as a unit. Biotic and biotic factors are interrelated (Growler 1997:106). If one factor is changed or removed, it impacts the availability of other resources within the system (http://library. Thinkers. Org). If an biotic factor is changed, such as soil nutrient levels, this may affect the growth of a biotic factor such as grass and trees, in turn making the plants decrease in population. This subtle change in turn affects biotic factors such as large organisms that need the plants to survive. This decreases the number of large organisms and affects the balance of the ecosystem. Ground cover is those herbaceous plants, small shrubs and non-vascular plants growing beneath the tree and shrub canopy (museum. Gob. Ins. Ca/man/nature/ nuns/ glossary. HTML. ) Ground cover is used for two main purposes; to hide the round beneath, or to protect it from erosion or drought. Foliage cover is the percentage of a fixed area covered by crowns of plants surrounded by a vertical projection of the outermost perimeter of the spread of the foliage (www. FSP. Fed. Us/re/ Fremont/scan/text/ APPENDIX X_C. HTML). Ground cover and foliage cover are along with biotic and biotic factors interrelated. The quantity of vegetation that lives in a particular area is totally dependent on the percent canopy cover that is above. If the role of photosynthesis; the process by which plants convert water and carbon dioxide into reverberates, using sunlight as the source of energy and the aid of chlorophyll (www. Surds. Haw ii. Du /SURDS glossary. HTML) is relied upon, ground areas with a high percentage of canopy cover will have a decreased amount of living vegetation underneath, as the process of photosynthesis cannot be efficiently accomplished. The relationship between biotic and biotic factors affects the relationship between ground cover and foliage cover as the two factors interrelate and assist or hinder the others actions. Aim: To determine the possible relationships between biotic factors, which include the varying organisms which surround an area, and biotic factors, such as the temperature of an allocated area, humidity, Ph levels and nutrient availability to see how they play a role in the relationship between ground cover and foliage cover. Hypothesis: If there is more overhead foliage cover than there will be less ground cover (in comparison to an area with no overhead foliage cover) because less sunlight and rain will reach the ground, the temperature will decrease and more animals will stand on and eat the ground cover that is there (due to the reduced temperature). Materials:lax mum measuring tappet small stakes Clinometers 1 x hammer lax permanent marker lax roll of marking tappets of good quality striving manometer 1 x canopy densitometer lax sheet of graph appear x thermometers empty AL drink bottles CACM ruler with millimeters marked outpoured:1. The XML transect was marked out by measuring out mum Of string. The stakes Were then placed into the ground at the appropriate measurements and the string was wrapped around as shown in Figure 1 . 2. The length of the string was marked at mm intervals with marking tape and he numbers were written on with permanent marker as shown in Figure 2. Figure 2 :Peacetime of the marking tape along the mum string. 3. The gradual slope of the gradient was then taken to determine how steep the selected land area was. 4. This was done with the manometer at zero to half meter by placing each end of the manometer at both beginning and end of each half meter and taking a measurement. 5. This was then continued for thirty meters and was then graphed. See Figure 3. Figure 3 :Peacetime of the manometer at every half meter point. 6. The percentage foliage cover was then taken to determine how much light to though the tree leaves onto the ground below. This was done using the canopy densitometer at zero to one half meters. 7. The densitometer was held directly upwards and looked through. The percent coverage was noted. This was continued for thirty meters. See Figure 48. The percentage ground cover was then taken at every half meter by determining how covered the ground was by grass and plants etc. This number was recorded and this was continued for thirty meters. 9. A description of every meter was taken to investigate was lived there and also how it lived there. Animal excretions and flowers etc. Were taken into account, as well as leaf litter. These results were put into table form. 10. The temperature for the selected area was taken both in the shade; by placing the thermometer under a tree, and in the sun; by placing the thermometer in the open at approximately 12 oclock. It was made sure that there was no human interference when the temperatures were taken. 1 1 . Thermometers were placed out standing upright at five minute intervals and the temperature was recorded. This was repeated over a period of 1 0 days. 12. The rain fall had to be measured so a rain gauge was made. A AL soft drink outlet was cut in half, and then the upper half was inverted to create a funnel. 3. Two gauges were made for under the tree canopy, and out in the open. The measurements were recorded over a period of ten days. The results were then put into table form. 14. A pitfall trap was then constructed to determine what species of animals lived there. A fifteen centimeter square hole was dug in both the undercover and open sections of the belt transect. 15. Two small rocks were placed at e ither side of the hole. The hole was then covered by a large rock resting on the two smaller rocks. See Figure 6. 16. The traps were then left over night, and the findings recorded.

Should or Should Not Doping Be Allowed in Sports Essay
Should or Should Not Doping Be Allowed in Sports - Essay Example On the other hand, the misuse of drugs is also detrimental to the health of competing athletes. In general doping devalues the integrity and image of sports. Doping has elicited vicious debate from both the medical and sporting aspect. While others question where the integrity of sport falls, when household personality in sport finds themselves in difficult places when discovered to have used performance enhancing drugs, others enjoy the use of performance enhancing drugs (Wiesing 168). In competitive sport, doping has been considered an unethical venture that does not emphasize the integrity of sports. Several high-profile athletes ââ¬â men and women have had their career thrown to the doldrums after having been found guilty of doping or making a public statement on doping. On the other hand, proponents of doping claim that doping in sports is necessary especially for those superstars who feel that they need to remain on top of their game and they would want to do that at all costs. The essence is that they would not want to lose their fame in sports and for that reason, they resort to doping. They are role models, icons and revered names to their fans and that is what they fear losing (Eber 345). This paper looks at doping in both contexts as to whether it should be allowed or not in sports. It also gives relevant examples of athletes who have thrown away their integrity in sports after being discovered to have used doping substances. While doping is consider ed as a contrary action to fair play, there are several athletes who believe in fair play. Certain competitive athletes stress on the need for fair play, and they are considered conditional cooperators because are guided by the values and principles of fair play. In other words, they do not take drugs because they believe their competitors do not use them as well. The biggest problem, however, becomes coordination of their intentions that would wander and resort to using performance enhancing drugs in competitions (Devine 637). Doping has become a global problem because of many international sporting events world over. Most international sports associations guided by International Olympic Committee (IOC), have for a long time worked on ways of stopping the spread of doping, but they have met resistance. As expected, the introduction of testing, education programs and other medical treatment, would reduce the behavior. Unfortunately, the efforts have managed to bear little fruits bec ause undetectable and more powerful doping techniques have come up. There are several doping techniques

A Short Story Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
A Short Story - Essay Example It was one fine Saturday evening when we went to the beach. The atmosphere was as amazing as it has always been. There were comparatively more people this weekend because of the scorching heat; however, everything was going smooth. The water was rough, and the lifeguards were roaming on the beach asking people not to go farther, as the water was very rough. Three of us were very rebellious, maybe the reason is very obvious, and that is of our age. We decided to let go of our worries and decided that our sole mission here was in the water. We got into the water, its cooling effect making us feel better than ever before. Because of the large crowd we opted to go a little farther from our usual spot in order to get enough playing space. Two others of our friends were also coming to join us. It would be an afternoon to remember; I thought. Everything was perfect; friends swimming past one another, water splashing on the face, the afternoon sun, and all the fun that was going wild each minute. For all this time, we thought we were the only ones who did not heed the lifeguardsââ¬â¢ advice. We assumed that we were the only people deep in the waters until we saw one child drowning. The kid was far from us and was screaming for help. Suddenly the entire environment changed, and people were shouting for help. Lifeguards were trying to keep off the crowd, also rushing towards the scene. Some swam towards the kid at a speed that I had only seen in water sports. All of a sudden, one of our friends started swimming towards the kid. However, to reach the drowning kid, he had to get past another group of teenagers swimming towards the shore in great panic. Seeing that he would drown himself we decided to go after him. He, however, managed to swim past the teenagers and towards the kid. Before he could reach the drowning kid, w ho was now almost submerged, a big wave hit him. There

The Most Famous Online Shopping Website In China Marketing Essay
The Most Famous Online Shopping Website In China Marketing Essay Abstract Taobao is the most famous online shopping website in China. It was launched in 2003 and within two years it became the leader of Chinas online shopping market. In order to keep the leadership position in increasingly intense competition and sustain its development, Taobao needs to modify and better its strategies for future development. Furthermore, its marketing strategies can also provide a good example for other online shopping companies. This essay is going to make an overall analysis on Taobaos business strategies by SWOT. Key words: Taobao; marketing strategies; SWOT analysis Content 1. Introduction 3 2.1 Leading position in Chinas online shopping market 4 2.2 Effective combination of diversified offerings 4 2.3 Precise market positioning 5 3.1 Limiting itself to local market 6 3.2 Insufficient screen process to control counterfeit products 6 4. Opportunities 7 4.1 Growing demand for online shopping in China 7 4.2 Government support 7 4.3 Safer payment systems for online transactions 7 5. Threats 8 5.1 Low entry barrier leads to fierce competition 8 5.2 Strict policy for third parties payment license 8 5.3 Higher logistics costs 8 6 Conclusions 9 Bibliography 10 1. Introduction Taobao operates a website, Taobao.com which is the largest Internet retail website in China. According to its website the transaction volume on Taobao (gross merchandise volume or GMV) exceeded RMB200 billion (US$29 billion) in 2009. Taobao launched in 2003, is owned by Alibaba Group, which is a family of Internet-based businesses. (Taobao, n.d.) Taobao provides not only online platforms but also third-party online payment services (Alipay) and instant messaging services (Aliwangwang) Platforms within Taobao include Alimama (alimama.com), an online advertising exchange and affiliate network for publishers in China. In addition, there is also a classified listing website Koubei.com. (ibid.) SWOT analysis, according to Philip Kolter, is an overall evaluation of a companys strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. (Kolter, 2003) As the competition in the online shopping market is becoming increasingly fierce, Taobao faces some problems as well. The purpose of this SWOT analysis is to provide a critical review of key factors that may slow down Taobaos future development. 2. Strengths 2.1 Leading position in Chinas online shopping market Taobao is an acknowledged leader in both B2C (business to consumer) and C2C (consumer to consumer) online shopping market in China. Taobao has (should be: had) more than 190 million registered users by (could use: at) the end of April, 2010. (Taobao, n.d.) It has built a strong brand and is recognised by more Netizen (which is defined as the Chinese population who have accessed the Internet in the past 6 months by China Internet Network Information Centre) (CNNIC. 2008, January 15th). The company is well-thought-of by customers which gives Taobao more advantages in competition. 2.2 Effective combination of diversified offerings Taobao combines its three segment businesses effectively to enlarge its customer base. Take Alipay as an example, it is a third-party online payment platform, provides a simpler, efficient and safe payment service for both customers and sellers. This service not only ensure (should be: ensures) the transaction security but also reduces the transaction risk for online consumers, as it enables buyers to confirm the quality of goods before releasing funds to sellers. For example, if goods are found (to be) broken or fake, customers can request Alipay to postpone the release of funds to sellers. (Taobao, n.d.) This service help (should be: helps) Taobao (to) attract more customers. In addition, an instant message (could use: messaging) service called Aliwangwang make (should be: makes) the communication between (the) buyer and seller easier. Moreover, this service enables (the) buyer and seller (to) have a directly private bargain during the transactions, which is the preference of Chinese customers. 2.3 Precise market positioning Taobao analyzed Chinas online shopping market at the beginning of its business. Different from other online shopping websites which prefer older white-collar worker(s) with higher salaries or people who like collecting and sharing, Taobao chose fashionable younger females as the target customer. This market positioning proved more suitable for Chinas market compared to other websites (apostrophe not needed) . This is one of the reasons that the growth rate of Taobao is much higher than other competitors. 3. Weaknesses 3.1 Limiting itself to local market The design of Taobao website and other supporting services were based on Chinas local market. This localisation strategy made Taobao grew (should be: grow) fast at the beginning. However, with the development of the website, this strategy limits Taobao to the Chinese market and (, therefore resulting in a) lack of presence in (the) global market. 3.2 Insufficient screen process to control counterfeit products Although Taobao has taken some measures to control the sale of fake goods, such as rating the sellers by credit value, the result was not as expected. Because of the free strategy that Taobao used, individuals can establish an online shop easily without charge and requirement. This makes it even hard to monitor and select sellers that commit fraud. Lack of effective screening processes to control the sale of counterfeit products has had a negative influence on customers confidence in Taobao. It could also affect Taobaos brand image and sales. 4. Opportunities 4.1 Growing demand for online shopping in China According to CNNIC, the number of online buyers reached 87.9 million by June 2009, increasing from 74 million in 2008 and 46 million in 2007. The online shopping penetration rate achieved 24.8% by June 2009. (CNNIC. 2010, January 15th; 2010, July 15th) As the data above shows, more people in China prefer to buy products online. Convenience and various choices could be two main reasons. This increasingly growing demand for online shopping contributed to the growth of Taobao. 4.2 Government support After the global financial crisis, (the) Chinese government provided a RMB 4 trillion stimulus package in order to boost the domestic economic growth through 2010. (the) IT industry received around 0.5% to 1% of the cash injection. (Xinhua, 2008). This gave online shopping companies strong support for future developments. 4.3 Safer payment systems for online transactions The improved online payment systems play an important role in the growth of Chinese online shopping markets. There are more flexible payment systems for customers to choose. For example, a third-party online payment system ensures the security of transaction(s) and enables customers to get their refunds easily. A simpler and safer payment for online transaction(s) attracts (should be: attract) more customers. 5. Threats 5.1 Low entry barrier leads to fierce competition Because of the low entry barrier and fast growing market, Taobao meets many challenges, particularly in the face of increased competition from new market entrants. In addition, without many technical difficulties, it is easy for other competitors to copy Taobaos business pattern. Therefore, Taobao will be forced to increase investments on advertising or technological innovation. 5.2 Strict policy for third parties payment license Recently, Peoples Bank of China issued an Administrative Measures for the Payment Services Provided by Non-financial Institutions which has raised the entry standard for third payment party. In order to get (could use: obtain) and keep the license, Taobao has to increase its expenditure on online payment. 5.3 Higher logistics costs Taobao will give customers suggestions about the logistic companies which are mostly local third party logistics providers and customers usually take the suggestions because of the lower delivery prices these companies offered, compared to other international express companies, such as DHL and UPS. However, local third party logistics recently announced that they would raise the price. As most online customers are highly prices sensitive, this will have a negative effect on Taobaos sale. 6 Conclusions According to the SWOT analysis, although there are some drawbacks which have negative effects on Taobaos future development, the advantages still outweigh the disadvantages. In addition, there are many opportunities for Taobaos further growth. This conclusion will give some suggestions for Taobaos future business expansion. First of all, in order to keep the leadership position, technological innovation is crucial for Taobao. Taobao may focus on continuous improvement of its online payment system, which is also one of its strengths, particularly in the aspect of transactions (should be transactions, without apostrophe) reliability and security. Moreover, website functions, Internet stability and high-speed access to websites are also important in providing a better user experience, which may help to attract more customers. Secondly, as Taobao has the advantage of large scale consumers and sellers, Taobao may segment its market to provide more specialized services based on different demands so that it can meet customers requirements more effectively. To sum up, it is undeniable that the future of (the) online shopping market in China is promising. Based on the statistics by CNNIC, It is in a steadily (should be: steady) development stage. In this attractive online shopping market, more complete logistics providers and payment systems will appear. These will provide Taobao more opportunities to develop in the future.
